Ethylene oxide (EtO) is an important chemical used for the sterilization of medical equipment and in the manufacture of plastics, glycols, detergents, solvents, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of this hazardous air pollutant (HAP) to sterilize critical (and semi-critical) medical equipment has increased significantly. However, recent studies indicate that this HAP is more harmful to humans than previously realized. Industry and regulatory initiatives are underway to better characterize the risks of EtO exposure to workers and communities. The first step in preparing to meet any new regulations and to properly characterize exposure risks is getting reliable and accurate EtO measurements. Now, for the first time, there is a solution that enables easy and rapid, facility-wide characterization of EtO emissions at various concentrations.
